Short Personal Bio
I am an artist that works in and between New York City and Rochester, NY in the U.S. My work is primarily focused on creating new media art works such as interactive installations, video art and electronic 'net.art'. I also dabble in conceptual art (immediatism) and sound. I am very interested in critiquing the relationships between the social, ecological and electronic.
For me, the use of dialog and the written word has become a very large part of my work. My work is primarily informed and influenced by current philosophical theory such as post-modern and post-structural theory as well as net theory, emergence theory, cybernetics and materialism. The philosophies of Deleuze and Guattari are my biggest influence as well as the Situationists, Hakim Bey, Paul Virilio and Manuel Delanda.
I have degrees in Painting (MFA) and Education in the arts (Ed.M). I am currently working on my doctorate of education at Teachers College at Columbia University. I have taught art and media courses at Kean University in New Jersey and SUNY Oswego in upstate New York. I was born in 1975 to a working class family in Rochester, NY.
Another Bio Written by Someone Else
Mark Grimm received his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education from the Teachers College at Columbia University with a focus on Studio and New Media Art in Higher Education. He has shown at the Museum of New Art, Detroit; Macy Gallery, Columbia University, New York; Ronald Feldman Gallery, New York. He has also participated in events such as the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India in 2004, and, most recently, an artist residency at Stone Quarry Art Park in Cazanovia, New York. Grimm has taught at Oswego State University, Kean University and the Instructional Media Lab, Teachers College at Columbia University.
Current Art and Research Interests Include
The Intersection of Technology | Ecology | Humanity through artistic discourse.
I am co-founder of the art and research group 'socialmediagroup', a visual project based journal and forum exploring active notions of technology, ecology, aesthetics and design.
I'm interested in the collaborative research and education of: Eco & techno-activism, p2p networking, hacking and cracking culture, Installation-Architectural Art Environments, guerrilla networking, open-source structures, non-hierarchy and non-linearity, complex environments, topology, electro-music and interactive environments, recycled materials and resources, digital video in art, research and documentary forms.
Recent Work
My work has become increasingly concerned with the intersection between the human, the ecological, and the technological. I have begun dealing with these relationships by the uses of architectural forms as images, moving and static; virtual, existing in the computer; and physical, as tangible in real space.
I'm interested in non-linearity and non-hierarchical structuring. Space and imagery exists in modular form, open-source structures and collaboration as a naturally occurring dialogue. There is a repetition of material, images and useable space, one idea flowing to the next and building on each other. I'm interested in things that are added to slowly and grow organically for example such as a genetic algorithm might do. All my works are continuously 'under construction'.
The underlying themes and concepts are socially activistic. I use environmental and social issues as hidden text veiled in a minimalist garb. This is and aesthetic sense, a design oriented minimalization of form. BUT it also yields too expandability and the plastic nature of its material uses.
